What is physical therapy?
Physical therapy helps restore movement, strength, and function after injury, surgery, or illness. It also helps manage chronic pain and improve mobility, balance, and overall quality of life.
Do I need a doctor’s referral to start physical therapy?
In New York, you can see a physical therapist directly without a doctor’s referral for up to 10 visits or 30 days (whichever comes first) under Direct Access law. However, some insurance plans may still require a referral for reimbursement.
What should I expect during my first visit?
Your first session includes a detailed evaluation where the therapist reviews your medical history, movement patterns, pain, and goals. A personalized treatment plan will be created and initial treatment often begins that same day.
How long is each physical therapy session?
Most sessions last 60 minutes, depending on your needs and treatment plan.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows free movement. Athletic wear or clothing that allows access to the area being treated is best.
